Can Light Help You Feel Better?

Can Light Help You Feel Better? The short answer is, Yes.  But let’s dive in a bit deeper.

It is a truth universally acknowledged that light properties and levels affect us as humans. And you’d probably be surprised at just how much!  In lower, warmer lighting, we ready for sleep and our bodies relax more; in stronger, cooler light we feel more productive and can achieve more types of tasks.

Light influences our sleep-wake cycles, which means the right kind of light can have a profound effect on our mood, productivity and health.  It can support us to work more effectively, recover more quickly from illness, or simply help us to feel better day-to-day.

Studies have documented the importance of light in reducing such conditions as depression and fatigue, whilst also improving alertness, modulating circadian rhythms, and treating conditions such as migraine, Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), myopia, high blood pressure and Type 2 diabetes.

Did you know? Good lighting has been clinically proven to help patients recover more quickly from illness and feel better, but over 90% of homes don’t have the recommended levels of lighting.

Want to feel better? Below are some early signs that your lighting may not be good for you – do any of these feel familiar?…

🔵 The space I spend most time in doesn’t have enough (a) daylight and (b) artificial light to do what I want, where I want

🔵 I don’t have control over the amount of light or visual temperature in my space

🔵 I have different energy levels in different rooms. I plan or locate my tasks appropriate to those energy levels

🔵 I suffer from eye strain, headaches, low mood, poor concentration or poor quality/lack of sleep

🔵 I find it hard to relax

If any of the above are ringing true for you, maybe it’s time to take a look into whether you can change your lighting – even in small ways.

Remember too, it’s not just the light in your home you need to consider.  We spend a huge portion of our days at work, so if your office or workspace is poorly lit, you could be feeling the negative effects.  Below is a quote from a customer we have recently helped, who previously dealt with Seasonal Affective Disorder – and since changing the lighting in their working spaces, life has been getting a lot brighter!

“I’m sure my business partner won’t mind me saying that in winter he finds the short, dark days hard. He has just told me that this is the first year he can remember that he’s not struggling with S.A.D. (Seasonal Affective Disorder) and this he believes is due to our new lighting from Light My Space. He says he feels so much brighter and has more energy which is life-changing.  It’s amazing for him and has improved life for everyone around him too!”  – K. West, ONLE Networking.
